werecow Posted April 2, 2005 Share Posted April 2, 2005 fungii are plants are they not???? hmmm plants breathe carbon dioxide and give off o2 right?? all we have to do is cover about 1/3 of the surface of mars with spores...let them do their work for about 30 yrs or so by then there should be a breathable atmosphere with enough insulation to keep in some heat so the mean temp would rise to a more livable range. if all goes well with my warp speed riding lawnmower i should be able to deliver a payload such as this to mars for a cost of just under $1 mil.(wouldnt want to be greedy) only problem i can think of is nowhere to refill on the way back..... Right idea, but you need lichen. I've already posted much about lichen in other mars threads, so I wont' bore you with details again. but it is THE plant for terraforming hands down. Soulreaper Posted April 3, 2005 Share Posted April 3, 2005 Algae has been a great subject of thought when it comes into "terraforming" Mars though it would by calculation consume a few generations (on a time-scale) before it would be complete, but I agree that things "HERE" should be taken care of first, otherwise I'm afraid humanity would continually be divided even in space. What if encountering other species that would have already learned how to exist in unification? What a low-blow and embarresment it would mean being human if so.. - just a thought. First contact with an advanced race, however may not be so good for society. There would be mass religious hysteria. Christians would wonder if Jesus died for the aliens as well, or just for humans. Did God create aliens? I don't feel that our society is ready for a first contact yet. Minor species, though would be great! It would make us wonder where else these lifesigns might be able to be found. It would open up a new age of exploration and government spending on NASA and related subsidiaries would be back to what they should have been all along. But, just think of all of the extremists...and the catholics... I don't think there is life there anyway. There probably was at one time, just not anymore. The question is: where did they go? Earth? That they sent missionaries to Mars to convert the Martians, but ended up enslaving them to work the Missions, and then killed them off with brutal punishments and human diseases? hoioh Posted May 6, 2005 Share Posted May 6, 2005 I read the entire topic and i must say, this is getting a bit sonseseuous. If there is life on mars it's probably not intelligent. I hope there is life on mars because that would mean we are not alone in this gargantuan universe. If we are not alone in this universe that would imply that God og any kind is a myth created by man, or that he/she is a higher life form that has evolved in this universe as wel as we have, only it understands the how (which we don't). I guess we'll only find dead stuff on mars, which is like finding dinosaurs in our own ground and doesn't prove anything much cuz all the prohets will say: "God put them there to confuse you." What i do think is iimperative in this matter is that we build something that's actually fast enough to reach Prima 1 & 2 (Alpha Centauri for those that don't know the stars) and see if there's life over there. Hell, we aren't even completely confident with dealing with our own life on Earth, let alone on Mars. No, lets just hope and pray to God, that there exists no life on Mars....
