Cybernetic Enhancements

It's certainl an interesting idea. The idea of a data-jack to connect directly to the internet (something Matrix-esque perhaps) is one of the more interesting ideas, IMO, and something that I would consider getting. (Imagine next-gen chat rooms where you are actually able to sit face-to-face with the people and talk)

If you could have internet in your head can you IMAGINE the amount of people who would be arrested for like... downloading stuff into thier mind?

You'd have to have a seperate computer and if anyone wanted to run a site they wouldn't use thier head as a server. So really what we want is an invisible laptop, not really for intensive use, in our heads.

actually it adds tons of pounds if u opt for the heavy implants. they will never build light ones until they found a suitable metal for it. Dont think about platinum. u will never afford it. somewhere along the line, we got stuck LISTENING to our sisters talking about their damn stupid lives. "BLAH BLAH BLAH" drives me nuts

This is really a bad idea. I ain't kidding when I say the stuff would make you sick, a terminator, non human.

There was some guy at MIT or someplace like that about 8 years ago I think. He would walk around all the time with an internet linkup hooked up to his body. He had a hand keyboard at his waist hooked up to some visual screen glasses for one of his eyes. He would walk around using one eye to see the world, while the other eye was in the internet. He could answer questions as fast as google delivered the answeres. I saw all of this on a 60 minutes interview.

What was interesting to me? The interviewer, Morley Safer, kept scratching at his face for no apparent reason.

The guy with the internet hookup? That part of his body, the eye and the brain behind the eye, was changing and becoming non human. Did you know people have energy? And that they can pass on their feeling and sensations to other people via this energy?

Morley Safer kept scratching at his face because he could feel where the internet guy was damaging his own face by wearing that internet hookup all the time. It was like the eye and brain around the internet screen were going dead or something. They were turning into machine.

It all sounds and looks really cool. Seriously, you don't need a weapon arm. Make your arm strong, then put a weapon in it.

But BorisP, the whole point in becoming cybernetic is that being human is not enough anymore! The human potential has been exhausted, it's a 'been there, done that' experience shared by 6 billion people. Humans have been trying for their entire history to become something more than what they happened to have evolved to be, and as soon as we have the opportunity to finally fulfill that desire, we owe it to ourselves and our ancestors to finally transcend the human experience.

I am all for cybernetic augmentation, and genetic for that matter(Just cuz the ST world fucked it up doesn't mean we have to as well). Why anyone wouldn't be is beyond my comprehension. I have noticed that the main arguement against augments is that it would make you less human, or less alive to use a less abstract term. A machine controlled by a human mind would be as real and alive as you are now. We are nothing more than protein based machines ourselves, so having a diffrent base construction wouldn't make you any less alive then, say, a silicon based lifeform. The point is life isn't in the materials used, it's somewhere else we haven't figured out yet. The idea something has to be organic to be alive could really screw us in the wrong first contact. Also, with self writing programming being very close to being on your home PC, this misconception that a machine can't be alive also needs to go soon. When a program does make the jump to sentience, the way it is perceived and used could seriously affect our future. Someone mentioned the Terminator, Skynet may have been much more open to a coexistence if we didnt use it as a tool of war to start with. And hey, on that note, seen Animatrix : The Second Renaissance.

these mechanics... they wear and tear. some more u'll have to mainthain them. maybe update the sortware. get latest norton every year. point is... it is simply not possible. u think man and mechine can coexist as one entity like the borg? or those battle star galactica robots? not. i like me the way i am. nice eyes, flexible, big and long. u dont want prosthetics. it aint original. wheres the value in that. but if it works for those disabled, i am the biggest supporter of the project. the enhancement that i would like to have is the ability of Kal El without the kryptonite allergic.

Dunno for sure' date=' but I think I'd try a Cybernetic penis... if it ever becomes available... then again, maybe that would just turn into a hard-ship. I'll have to mull it over for a while...[/quote']

Piers Anthony's Pornucopia is the adventures a a fellow with a detachable penis and multiple prostheses. It's a riot. It's hard to find. And audacious enough to be worth tracking down and buying!

1. We wear and tear and if you don't maintain yourself, chances are you'll die young.

2. Saying it isnt possible isn't a very Trek attitude. Snag average Joe from 193X, hell, 197X and explain the internet as of 2005 to them, how possible would they think it is.

3. Cybernetic prosthetics are original, your arms and legs are not. There are roughly 6.5 billion humans now, and who knows how many more before that. Not to mention the primates who've had arms, legs, and eyes way longer than us.

Is it just me' date=' or are our topics starting to bleed over a little bit much? I thought that this was the Cybernetic Enhancements topic, not the gay/straight?[/quote']

What about skillwires?

A neural hardwire interface to load preprogrammed physical skill sets. No need to train for the job, just slot the appropriate skill chip while you are at work. When your shift is done, you hand the skill chip to the next worker, and slot your "Hoverboard VII" chip to skate on home.

Personally, I could go for an aqualung gill for spear fishing on my next trip to Baja. Wouldn’t even need to be cyber, I’d settle for an external rig if it was allot smaller than an oxygen tank.

How about bioware?

A type of synthetic enhancement that is made with organic tissue. Things like: pathogen filters, eagle eyes, fish gills, neural stimulators, muscle boosters, reflex enhancers, extra digits, Tails, etc…

Your own system would replenish and feed the enhancements. They could grow back when damaged. Maybe they could even reproduce new little seedlings that you could sell back to the Bioshop to cover the cost of the original. No need for centralized manufacturing, but instead they would be reproduced much like torrents.
