Soulreaper
All good posts and opinions... but hey - Cyborg me! ... not all though, there are of course many pleasant things about the flesh - how crappy to end up in a future with bad-half-ass cyber sex like in "Demolition Man" :D for one thing...among many! Soulreaper
However: Another idea could be to really focus on understanding genetics and then through genetics "reinforce" the flesh and our bodies to physically be tougher, better, etc. etc. which would mean that it is a "cyborg" enhancement without suffering the loss of human life/flesh. I know there are many thoughts and opinions about both genetically enhancing people or through artificial means such as interfaces or other assorted "mechanichal" upgrades. But coming from a "good" perspective, with HOPEfully developed people who can handle it, I'd say an organic way of enhancement would be "better" instead of exchanging it for machines, however a "half-machine" life or a cyborg/machine life might mean new experiences and a DIFFERENT way of life, not "not life" - something different. But as I said, a clash with the two extremes, I'd for now prefer organic superiority/enhancing. Just consider the possibilites. Again I refer to Stephen Hawking and what he has to say about things - check it out! ALL of it. Part of future development is tied to our physical (not only psychological) limits / barriers. To summarize part of Hawking's stuff - we've outgrowned our physical evolution. As for long term thinking (I always work LONG TERM); This also connects into a multitude of "branch-threads" or "branch-thoughts" concerning our Planet, environment, resources etc. etc.
azuro
do as u must. perhaps to help improve the lives of physically disable people. to change those wooden/plastics prosthetics. but i disagree doing it to healthy humans or purposely enhancing humans for war or anything that promotes devestation. save the environment first. improve living quality. and what is this globalization thing doing in the world today??? it is not bridging the rich-poor gap. its making the gap worst! poor ppl hv poor env. thus creating poor health. again, cybernetics wont be able to be enjoyed by all, just the rich! u guys watch CASSHERN? the japanese movie. something like that. elderbear
So many great posts to read ... some I smile at, others make me shudder! Personally, I'd like the info-jack upgrade. Even if it were just a way to allow me to enter info w/o a kbd, that would be enough. I don't need Neuromancer/Snowcrash jacking in, just a way to escape the keyboard when mobile. Second priority would be prostheses for sight and sound. Two men I love a great deal have steadily been losing their hearing. Phone conversations are starting to give way to IMs. They can no longer hear and enjoy music fully. One of those men is my father, and I'm afraid that someday, I'll suffer his fate. And, I'd like to be able to stargaze and read in bed w/o wearing corrective lenses. I'm especially rebellious right now, because I seem to need bifocals. Following that, perfect artificial knees that can withstand the stress of an overweight person returning to running after a decade of decadence. And while I'm wishing, I'd like the ability to alter the spectral response of my vision at will, at least going from IR through UV.

[/quote'] I once knew a guy who built prostheses for amputees. He wasn't Bill Gates rich, but he didn't really have to worry about income. He took commissions when he needed ca$h, and then spent most of the year vacationing where he liked. Definitely not tools for the poor.

Yeah - all the materials science work into exotic new carbon composits - seems like eventually they could be organically created - and then become a "natural" part of the re-engineered human. Imagine tendons reinforced with nanotube carbon molecules - perhaps virtually indestructable. Flesh backed by spider-silk, much more resistant to tearing. And while we're at it, perhaps we could enhance George W. Bush so he wouldn't say stupid and embarassing things such as his quip that attending the Pope's funeral was the "highlight of his presidency" ... Other than that, Jaqui, how did you enjoy Dallas? elderbear
what are you on about?... ofcourse we're evolving. You mean to say a species can evolve without procreating? very interesting as that usually leads to extinction. Evolution w/o procreation is basically impossible. You need new generations for selection (natural or human) to proceed. If you did it in a lab, it would still be procreation, but not evolution - it would be engineering! An example of evolution in today society it the height difference compared to 100 years ago. Actually, hunter-gatherer societies were frequently much taller than their ancestors who became settled agrarians. Jared Diamond mentions differences up to 6" in height. Example' date=' humans are responsible for the introduction of AIDs into our culture and look how devastating that is, AID's didnt exist until we started playing around with the immune system and if we could learn to keep our pants on chances are within the next 100 years AIDs will be around but under control.[/quote'] In the strictest sense of the word, AIDS didn't exist until quite recently - although the virus has been around for a long time. But never mind HIV/AIDS (for this moment) - everybody reading this board probably knows how to keep themselves safe. Have you been following the Marburg outbreak in Zaire? While Marburg doesn't kill as often as Ebola (60-70%, if my memory serves vs. 90%), it can be transmitted as an airborn virus. For a real thriller, track down a copy of the book The Hot Zone. Then read Steven King's The Stand. Then see if that Marburg outbreak has been contained or not ...
elderbear
Wireless cyber data port. Just think of the fun a wetware virus could have with yer brain!!! elderbear
Please..... a universal translator that includes the language "female". It would make my life SO much easier! :D ;) The best way to learn that language is to shut one's mouth, except to make affirmative grunts from time to time! ;)
elderbear
the whole point in becoming cybernetic is that being human is not enough anymore! The human potential has been exhausted I beg to differ. Few of us have mastered the art of using our prefrontal lobes to ameliorate limbic hijackings. Yet it can be done, with practice. Few of us have learned to communicate with those who differ "too much." Yet the potential is there. OMG! What were those jokes about wanting a universal translator for "female?" We have the potential to bridge gender, age, and culture gaps that is extremely untapped.
elderbear
yeh but imagine having a direct input into your brain and learnin stuff matrix stylee Imagine someone inputting false information into your brain, Matrix-style. Is that not how the human race was enslaved as bio-batteries? Imagine an electronic device that causes brain waves to shift into a trance state, then using potent & primal imagery to instruct you in your behavior ... Wish it were as imaginary as the Matrix ... we call it television ...
Weyoun
Some intersting points, Elderbear. One little thing though. As I was reading, I saw your Avatar 8 times in a row. You might wanna use the edit button a tad more. ;) The best way to learn that language is to shut one's mouth, except to make affirmative grunts from time to time! ;) Lol. That works well, until you hear them say, "That wasn't an answer!" And then you have gotten so used to just saying "yeah," that you stopped paying attention, and don't know the right answer, assuming it is one of those questions that have one.... Yup. It's happened to me before. ;) EDIT: WHEEEEEEEE!!!! I am a captain now!

Soulreaper
Lol well, Elder, as usual I agree :D Though it was quite a few threads - someone opting for next rank? hahaha J/K. But of course, even at the level we're currently at; there are thousands and thousands of different small things to "master". Most people can't even breath correctly (a martial arts or similar master can easily spend 5-10 years JUST focusing on that, and then we have ballance and the list goes on..) But of course, genetically toughen tendons and flesh and muscels and arteries and just about whatever would be a good thing, I believe so - but still the matter of tapping our innate potentials in many areas still remain AND would of course further enhance any ground-up / basic enhancements. But then to go one step further, why not combine a little of the two (three) options? Infojacks and some good stuff that we can't do organically and then improve on a genetic/organic level as far as that one goes.. hm.. best of both worlds? :D
Soulreaper
And while we're at it, perhaps we could enhance George W. Bush so he wouldn't say stupid and embarassing things such as his quip that attending the Pope's funeral was the "highlight of his presidency" ... Well, that indeed is a tough nut however impossible - jacking up GWB to an interface would only create an infinity of new viruses and blue screens  :cyclops: :p :D ;) And besides, I think he would need more PSYCHOLOGICAL assistence first =) Late Show / Letterman always has a small clip feat. GWB. Reporter - "What is your opinion about our financial situation?" GWB - "........... *5 minute silence* *rolleyes* *huh!?* .." End of clip :) :D ;) - 'nough said! But enough of funny off topic topological answers and back to topic!

Oma
Eh...I think I just made the "code" or whatever in an "add reply"-box by using the URL button. Then I copy-pasted it and inserted it into my profile/sig window. "Stambaugh Designs" EDIT: I thought I could avoid making a link if I just put quotation marks around it.... I'll try misspelling url instead: [Ã…rl=http://www.stambaughdesigns.com]Stambaugh Designs[/Ã…rl]
