Ulysses
Good News on lastnights opener on BBC1 for Dr Who.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7333321.stm
TetsuoShima
That's about double of the Torchwood viewers. I'd expected more actually, given so many people's dislike for Torchwood.
Ulysses
Just proves sci-fi can get the ratings in if its at the right time of day and on the right channel...
dBLOOD
I believe this is not the cause of the high rating. Doctor Who is less geekish as usually sci-fi series are.
Ulysses
You got to be kidding Dr in general is more geekish that most of the other stuff, BSG for example is not classed as geekish nor is SG:A so that does not have owt to do with it... USWhoFan
Glad to hear it. :D Since it's return hasn't Doctor Who continuously brought in high ratings?
TFMF
ST:A??? :o Star Trek: Atlantis o_O Coming this fall! Anyway, I think Doctor Who deserves these kind of ratings. It is simply a brilliant show, and I hope it can keep it up for a long, long time! :)
Ulysses
who the hell said owt about ST:A :P....scroll up! Im dead pleased its had such high ratings since the re-launch of this great show as well! mmmmm one thing I hate is the term Geekish when it comes to sci-fi and there fans, I for one thing people like ourselves who love sci-fi are more enlightened than the sad people who watch mainstream TV such as soaps and relailty crap shows (apart from the apprentice which is enjoyable watching them getting fired by sir alan sugar). At least the writers/makers of Sci-Fi have to use there imagination to produce great shows like SG:A, SG-1, Trek, BSG, Dr Who and all the other sci-fi shows
Antilles
8.4m is rather good considering the start time. Around 9 would be more than adequate by todays standard even for Dr Who. Well find the final result today but for overnight figures I was rather pleased. As for TW figures, theyll never equal 'Who's' as a lot fo Who fans just dont bother with it, I think Im almost falling into that category, Ive only seen 1 and half episodes of TW this year, just goes to show, Id never miss a Who. :)
Ulysses
I take it this figure does not include people watching it on BBCi
Tenebrae
It's not surprising - Saturday has become a big TV night again and Dr. Who is something that the whole family can watch. It receives a lot of publicity - both from the BBC and other media outlets who eat up Who stories and it's slap bang in the middle of prime time. If it WASN'T getting 9m - that would be strange. Tenebrae
Ah but MOST sci-fi is aimed at the male 18-35 demographic. And if you look at Heroes... and borderline sci-fi Lost... they got plenty of money and publicity and chat. But if you're making "Billy and his mates in space"... I think it's hard to sell that as mainstream. Lost and Heroes both get away with it because they sideline their sci-fi/fantasy elements and focus on the human drama and BSG is pretty similar. Star Trek and Stargate etc. - and Voyager was particularly horrific in this regard - made the characters fight to get characterised beyond the incessant noise of meaningless technobabble.
