Do you believe in psychic stuff? Psi Corp, The Force, Vulcan Mind Meld?

Elderbear wants to talk science fiction.

Does psychic stuff like the Psi Corp in Babylon 5 or the Vulcan Mind Meld in Star Trek or the force in Star Wars really truly exist? Maybe not super power but does it exist at all?

What do you think about it? Would you be scared if people could read your mind or make you do things?

What if everyone was psychic but they either had to grow old, or they had to have special training when they were young? That would mean that at some time, it would be your turn to read peoples mind and make people do stuff.

If you were an old person and power hungry, would you search out the young people who were psychic and damage them? Sort of like that bible story where the king killed all the boy babies so no replacement king would be born?

If you were young and psychic, would you know it? What if you thought everyone could finish another persons sentences? What if you thought that everyone always knew what the other person was thinking? What if you thought everyone could predict what was going on and what was likely to happen? What if you thought that everyone could watch people and tell what they were going to do, like they were moving in slow motion?

What if we naturally had some form of psychic ability?

There's been a lot of research done to show that if basic modalities (sight, hearing, speech) aren't used in about the first five years of life, brain development prunes out these areas, and the abilities cannot be developed later in life.

There is a lot of anectdotal evidence of twins sharing a "special" connection. Many of these stories strongly hint of psychic abilities.

If humans were born with "psychic" brain areas, twins would usually be in a position to use and develop such areas far better than people in empirical western society who generally disbelieve and also discourage their children from believing in such things.

The average child would end up with severely under-developed psychic abilities - and maybe even have them (un)naturally pruned away. Twins would be expected not to suffer from this so much.

Having had a number of experiences that cannot be explained by modern empirical models of reality - and these were at least somewhat "psychic" - they at least involve some form of "connection" that is not generally recognized by western science - I am inclined to believe that "psychic" abilities might not be impossible.

One only has to read about how the US government suppressed Wilhelm Reich - to the point of jailing him for years and burning his research notebooks (not allowing him to introduce his experimental evidence at his trial for violating FDA regulations) - to wonder ... WHY?
