DirkDiggler
For crying out loud weve been waiting 16 years for new Who and so far all weve had is tongue in cheek S**t, when is it going to catch up with the rest of the 21 centuary?
tinpusher
perhaps if you were a bit more specific regarding your desires and disappointments I could answer your question. It would atleast help to stimulate conversation.
Antilles
Not sure where your feelings are coming from, Im pretty happy so far in this new series, compared to some of the crap that JNT turned out in the late 80s, well how tongue in cheek can a giant Bertie Bassett be. But...if ya dont like it, theres always the classic vids for you to watch.
ze0ro
While I agree a few things are a bit silly and unfortunately reflect present-day pop culture (i.e. Britney Spears - Toxic being called a classic ballad), the new series is quite good. I could live without the hints of romance between the Doctor and Rose, as the Doctor really never had interest in companions (aside from perhaps Romana, but she was a Time Lord). I would have also preferred the classic console room or even the 8th Doctor's gothic console room to the crappy design they have. Lastly, many of the aliens (I won't list examples so to avoid spoiling) are campy, poorly thought out and look like costumes instead of real living things. However, these gripes aside, the show is rather fantastic. We have been waiting a long time, and I think this new series is well worth the wait. DirkDiggler
Sorry about the lack of specifics with my gripes it was an emotional knee-jerk reaction to yet more camp silly one liners such as "do you mind not farting while im saving the world" whats all that about?,and as for the story that required that stupid line aliens with gas problems i mean really come on! i really do see alot of potental for this show it just needs to get a little more serious after all it is possible to have a strong theme with humour it just needs to lose the silliness, come on bbc wales makes us proud!! Antilles
Thing is, thats RTD's kind of humour and I think were kinda stuck with it, so long as he doesnt bring too much campiness or homo-erotic stuff in Ill be fine. Im not homophobic, I just feel theres no place in 'Who' for it. And the farting aliens, definitely to keep the kids amused, think back when you were 8-10 if you watched the show, youll be in a situation at school or wherever and when someone farts youll think theyre alien, at least Im sure thats how kids think lol. Same goes for the pig in a space suit, kidsll love it.

Pella
I've got to admit the new series is full of hits and misses for me. I didn't like the pilot but loved 'The End of the world' and 'the unquiet dead'. There were some brilliant moment this week, but I struggled to get past the pig in the spacesuit and the farting aliens. The drama is excellent, but the humour is poor. The greatest surprise pleasure I've taken from the show is Billie Piper as Rose. she is very easy to conect with on an emotional level and her performance is excellent. It's a shame the same could not be said for Christopher Eccelston. His performance ranges from excellent to purile and often in the same scene. And why does he have to grin innanely so much and say 'fantastic' so much? Mr Eccelston is a fabulous actor but he does give the part the degree of seriousness it needs. At times he merely mugs the camera mercilessly with his inane grinning. Tom Baker could get away with this Mr Eccelston cannot. Still I look forward to the chrismas special when David Tennant takes the role. I have not seen his tv work but his performances in the Big Finish audio 'Colditz' and 'Medicinal Purposes' are outstanding. I hope he is very much like Paul McGann's portrayal of the 8th Doctor. I'd also like to see a return to the edwardian style outfits of the Doctor - or at least different out outfits
atgxtg
ONe thing about Dr. Who is that the series is always changing. One story mght seem poor, but the next one could be fantastic. Or vice versa.Even many o the best episodes had bad bits. The new series is just starting, and is bound to have growing pains, just like the original program. Heck by this point in the orignial series we have seen a decent pilot episode, followed by a story about primitive people loooking for the secret of fire. tinpusher
Personally I thought the pig in the space suit was wonderfull. This is, after all is said and done, supposed to be a kids show and I have to tell you that it was wonderful to see my son laughing so hard. He was seriously on the edge of his seat wating to get his first look at the alien and when the little pig dude showed up he lost it! It really helped bring back memories for me. For example, I remember watching the Tom Baker episode "Ark in Space" as a child and laughing my ass off when we finally got to see the monster. I mean come on! That was a guy in a sleeping bag doing an inch-worm impersonation! Sorry, Im rambling. To the point, you say? Fine. The point is this it wouldnt be doctor who if things looked too real. As for the farting. . . well he thought that was hilarious too. PS: Love the new avatar RS, what do you think of my sig?
Antilles
Sig is cool Tin. Thats the movie intro isnt it? Havent seen it for a while. I was watching Frontier In Space last night and now that Ive been watching the new series so much I was actually shocked at how 'hammy' the acting was and how rubbery the costumes and makeup were, it was hilarious, but as a child we thought it amazing, and I suppose the same goes for kids of today, theyll see it differently in 20-30 years when theyve grown up and, 'god willing' their kids are watching the Nth Doctor. (who will probably be completely CGI by then lol). When Saturday nights come I try not to be 37 and just be 7-10 again:)
tinpusher
Nope, thats the DVD Intro sequence before the menu appears. You're absolutely right, I'm the same way. On Sunday evening after I have dld the new ep and created a KVCD from it we all sit down and I become a child again trying to appreciate all the cheesy sets/props/acting. coolcat13
Well as a long time Dr Who fan (since I was 8 years old and watched it on american public broadcasting [PBS]); I have totally enjoyed the show .sure there may have been small parts that were annoying but i could point those out in any show . This is like a rebuilding process and I like the direction it is taking . Character development aside look at some of the long term plots that are developing . we have the last Time Lord theme, the time war theme , and now we have UNIT and some grounding back to the Dr and earth . much like the old Dr Who shows you have a blend of comedy and drama . while the comedy is at times questionable the drama has been nothing short of spectacular . This is simply my opinion but I am quite thrilled so far . 1-10 ratings 10 bieng an absolute masterpiece Rose - 8.5 End of the World 9.5 the Unquiet Dead -9.5 the Aliens of London 9.

sirdick
When has Dr Who been fully serious? He always takes a comical stance on anything so it doesn't turn into a big drama. When I started watching Dr Who it was repeats of Jon Pertwee (he's still my fave) but I havnt seen them in ages. I got spearhead from space on DVD and remember just how great it was, and despite the idea of the story being serious he was anything but. This is a kids show (despite the number of adult viewers ;)) and a damn good one at that. I think this new series is ace, probably not the best Dr ever, but still high quality. I'm amazed so many people take it so seriously. Looking forward to the Daleks a week on Sat ;)

Ksenia
Perspective of a new Dr Who fan-- A longtime scifi fan, I never grew up on Dr Who. I recall flipping past it on PBS, seeing some curly haired guy in a scarf, and changing the channel. That was all I remembered from it. And when my boyfriend downloaded the first episode, as he grew up with it in New Zealand (where I am now), I saw the first few minutes and as soon as I saw the mannequins I figured it was the stupidest thing I'd ever seen and went to bed. A week later, he was watching the End of the World episode, and I couldn't help but watch as well...and I was quickly hooked. I loved some of the absolute silliness as well as the seriousness. I then went back and watched the first episode, and having a new perspective on how the series is supposed to be, enjoy it so much more. I love how the Doctor can go from his silly grin to complete seriousness in a few moments, and love how Rose is our link to all the fantastic new things; she does a great job. Having no anticipations about it, I find the series extremely enjoyable and wait on the edge of my seat for the next episode. And on the plus side, I have lots of history that I don't know of that I can catch up on - lots of old episodes and previous doctors to keep me entertained! Antilles
Ksenia, that sums up for me what Doctor Who was made for. I relate to everything you said ,aprt from the fact I grew up on Who. It also proves that the new show especially is working well. Glad youre enjoying it and I envy your having all those years of 'classic' stories to catch up on, youll be very busy but I can assure you youll be extremely entertained. DOnt forget to pop back with any questions and feeling you have about the old stuff, fav Doc, companion etc.
