Alien Cultures

What I was wondering is if anybody would think a Star Trek series based someplace other than Earth/Earth's ships would be interesting? Maybe a specialized joint Vulcan/Earth mission, or even an Earth/Denobulian craft doing specialized research. I think the interplay between the cultures and personalities would be interesting. I've also thought that a series or mini movie would be interesting if it were about a human who somehow got raised in one of these cultures then went to Star Fleet Academy on earth, how they would adapt, how people would perceive them, kind of like Worf only in reverse. Comments?

I think that this kind of story has a lot of potential, especially casting the human as an "alien" in alien society, as well as not really fitting in on earth. What's more, it could be done well, with a much lower budget than the spacefaring shows.

That could be very interesting with the Andorians. How would a human raised by Andorians cope? They live on an ice world so he/she would probably be considered weak by his/her peers, and without having antenna, he might be considered deformed also, even though that isn't the case. Some very good ideas here.

It wouldn't have to be Andorians. It could be any race, Tellurite, Vulcan, Klingon, anybody. Some races don't seem tolerant of aliens, however that would be different if through a catastrophic accident left them with a baby to take care of. Maternal instinct kicks in and SOMEBODY would take in the orphan. Of course, that couple or single or family might be ridiculed by their own for this, but that would be part of the whole scenario.

I don't know how alot of people would react. It might not be a good reaction.

Yes, the concept is interesting, but teamwork and human evolution is the essence of Star Trek. Trek, like all sci-fi, is meant to teach us something about ourselves. We can't learn about ourselves from a show based around an alien culture.

Maybe a different show. Just don't do it to Star Trek.

on the contrary...i think that we can learn a lot about ourselves by watching how another species acts toward us, acts toward each other, and acts toward another species (not us puny terrians)...is not interaction with others the basis for all culture????

Lets go to Andoria!!!!!!!! Long live Commander Shren!!!!!

In other words, let's not boldly go where no man has gone before. Every ST series has been based on the TOS template. You can draw water from the well so many times before it starts to dry out.

The ability to step back and look upon ourselves as an outsider would offer unique opportunities to analyze and question our assumptions, culture, ideals, and beliefs. Think of all the insights into human behavior gained by Jane Goodall's and Diane Fossey's research into chimpanzee, bonobo and gorilla behaviour.

Just to throw a twist in the Andorians, how bout we have a blueskin raised by the blind telepathic albino pacifist Aenar in the ice fields. Or vice versa

I hope his antenna grows back soon

I think they could definately pull of a Klingon-centric mini-series. Klingons definately have the largest fan following of all the aliens. Vulcans-only would be boring as hell.

DS9 actually wasn't all that human-centric, the station was Bajoran, and I think on the whole humans made up a minority of the regular characters.

Really I'd like to see the next trek series take place in the now romulan neutral zone, as a federation/romulan war with new and improved romulan characters. I think the timeline would leave room for such an event sometime in the 25th century, the romulans are relatively unexplored, and so is an all-at-war series.

I don't know that I, for one, would care for an all war take on Star Trek. It might get a little tedious. I think I enjoy the discovery aspect of the series more than conflict. The exploration of a human raised by Klingons would be quite interesting, especially seeing daily life of Klingons who aren't warrior caste.
