Antilles
Well apart from the spoilers they done on the 'Next Week' trailer at the end of part one Im still looking forward to the outcome of this first 2 parter of the series. Look forward to more cliff hangers (so long as they dont keep spoiling it). If anyones seen the clip of the Slipheen moving through the halls of Downing Street, it had been bugging me all week and it suddenly dawned on me it moved almost the same way the creature from Ghostbusters moved, you know, the 'Dog' thing. Coincidence no doubt or inspired but the animation looked a tad better on the Slipheen. Strangely tho, they seem to be clumsy when we see them move up close with the obvious actor in a rubber suit (which I love btw, to a limit) bouncing head and all LOL. 1 week to DALEK wheeee! Antilles
That was another pretty good episode. A mix of corny lines and some good action and suspense. "Mickey the idiot...the world is in your hands!" Classic :) The 'leaving home' part at the end was a bit dumb, why bring those sort of emotions into it, its an adventure, just jump in the TARDIS and go. Oh and thank goodness Mickey didnt jump in, and I cant believe the Dr actually invited him at one point. Phew! I was altogether more impressed with next weeks trailer for DALEK. So far it looks like theres just one locked up in a high security vault somewhere and it DOES say 'EXTERMINATE'...several times. There was a rumour they werent going to have it say that anymore, but Im glad they are. And whats with the desire to destroy Salt Lake City....is RTD a Mormon hater? :) lol Oh and one more thing about tonight episode i liked... "MADE IN BRITAIN!" mcant
I liked the "launch their WMD in 45 SECONDS! bit lol a cheap shot but funny, a bit like in the first episode how the american response to an alien landing was to ground all civillian air traffic, think someones being a little political? Ulysses
Thought this weeks was quite good actually, have to admit i cant wait for next weeks with the return of the darleks. Ulysses
Antillies did you see the program following Dr Who, they had a clip from next week's episode with the darlek at the bottom of the stair case and the dr and rose climbing up the stairs and the darlek saying " elleeeeeeeeeeeeevate"

coolcat13
alright that was another great Dr Who . However like the rest of you I am more stoked with the up and coming episode . did any one catch that the Dr was saying that the Dalek was the last of its kind and somehow must have slipped through time . Now the question is could it be remotely possiable that the Daleks and the TimeLords had some truce to face a common enemy ?or maybe both sides in the time war were devestated ? more intrigue , like I said stoked BTW R/M/N icky doesnt seem like all that bad a guy that he couldnt travel with the Dr . after all the Dr has had companions like Turlough who were much more annoying lol
SoCalWolf
yeah, Mickey definitely came off better in this episode than he did in "Rose". Still glad he isn't coming along though. Looking forward to the Dalek (note the lack of an "r"!) next week.
Antilles
Yes I did see the trailer last week from the Richard & Judy show with the Dalek rising up the stairs and saying ELEVATE! Thats my avatar, ya can almost hear the words when my avatars head-lights flash! :) (Changing to new Dalek Avatar soon, if anyone wants to use this Dalek Avatar, grab it while you can.) Im glad they brought in the UNIT website too, although why the password was different, its bison, yet in the show its buffalo, I know they are similair creatures but all the poor kids trying to get into the sites extra pages will be stumped. PS Lets keep this sci-fi, not need for using the 'Yanks' terminolgy, theyll only start calling us Brits and well have a flame war on out hands :) Thanks! CrusadrMoron
The thing that kept popping into my head was; Doom3 reverse Scooby-Doo chase. The suspects actually were monsters and any minute I was expecting the Doctor to turn his sonic screwdriver into a BFG9000 :stare: I do like the aliens reasons for ascending the native power structure; a big score for a crime family. Let's see the Soprano's beat that eh? The fact that there's an alien museam on Earth and it's located in America makes me think it might be Area 51. Especially with its proximity to Reno and the talk of Salt Lake City in Utah. I do wonder what will happen to the big ass escape ship that the calcium hell babies needed to escape off Earth with. The cute green energy shillouette with skeliton within Dalek attack method is a nice throwback to 'Mars Attacks' especially with the grating voice of the plant matter cyborg in question. They really built up the menace of that Dalek. Especially how it's in a Hannibal Lector containment cell. "EX-TER-MIN-ATE CLARICE" Here's hoping the Doctor Who Confidential is a new one. Can't wait to see those A&E style retrospectives for a freaking sci fi series ;)
Antilles
I had a feeling it was going to be obvious that this weeks talk was going to be more about Dalek, what with the trailers and all. Actually during WW3 when the Doctor and co were talking about 'something' being up in space, before he said it was fake and an excuse, my brain automatically though 'The Daleks'...up in space, waiting for a signal, the Slitheen were scouts or something, thatd been good too, a 2 parter turning into a kind of 3 parter a la Frontier In Space/Planet Of Daleks. But...sadly no. Theyve worded the trailer clips very cunningly, were led to believe this is the ONLY Dalek survivor but the Doctor actually says "must have fallen through time, the only survivor!" That could simply mean there was a Squadron of Daleks and it was the only one who survived and got caught on earth, although how it end up here is a mystery. It really worries me to know where RTD is taking some of the classic WHo material if these are true. The Last Time-Lord, the Last Dalek! Id hate to think that this is true and well never see any more Time-Lord or Dalek stories. Buuuut, this is a time travel series, perhaps hes going to do a Brannan Braga and make one helluva confusing time-altering story arc where everything turns out differently and makes us all go oooh, aaah! Just so long as he DOESNT do a Brannan Braga if ya know what I mean! :) Sorry Trek fans!
SuperK
Well, I was ok with it until they got to the UN launch code thing. The writers get a lot of lattiude when off-planet and dealing with aliens, but when they start talking reality they need some fact checking. (like spend 20 minutes on the internet) 1) The UK hasn't given it's nuke launch codes to the UN. No nation has, nor do can I foresee any nation doing so. It seems the writers have a soft spot for the UN, but no nation is going to surrender that kind of sovereinty, and certainly not to an orgainzation that has the corruption the UN has. 2) The UK has 4 Trident armed subs which are the sole nuclear force at this time. One is on patrol at any given time with two ready to sortie, and the forth in overhaul status. Each sub carrys about 40 weapsons (MIRV'd). With this force they are intending to start WW3 by hitting the other nuclear powers with the expectation that they will hit, it seems, everyone back. You'd think. atleast, they might start with someone with a larger arsenal. Even if the Sub's did launch - and you'd hope they'd have some questions about launching missles at ground targets when they are told they are to hit a space craft - this plan asumes that everyone else will A) Launch, and B) do so indescrimately. Back in the Cold War, it was planned to hit everyone if total nuclear war did happen, but I hardly think we'd (the US) nuke China if the UK hit us today. Also, there are alot of nukes on the planet, but hardly enough to turn the surface into radioacitve slag. And planet-wide they'd be a lot of surviviors to contend with. A great many that would have some vinegar in thier kitchen. 3) There is no magical website with a super cool password that can automatically and remotely launch anything from a sub. That's just the thinking of people that play too many computer games. Sub's have limited communication, and to launch anything requires the crew's action. A click of the mouse isn't going to do it. ------ Ok, maybe the Siltheen aren't the sharpest lot, and thier plan is not going to work, but the UN launch code thing, and the internet missle launch is the work of writers that seem to lack the understanding of how things work, or don't have the juice to figure out something more plausable. I am enjoying the Dr. Who, don't get me wrong, I just tend to get a bit annoyed with such obvioulsy unworkable plot lines. BK
CrusadrMoron
Super K, I'm glad you're not a hater about this ;) Actually I'm such a softie for Dr.Who, in the respectible showing that has been broadcast so far, that gaping wounds in plot are totally missed when watching. I do hope you keep pointing out bizzare writers tricks like the ones you mentioned above. You aren't nitpicking just keeping the show-smiths honest and that I can agree with B) Not so much rabid or jaded as having enough consciousness to kick ones disbelief out of suspension occasionally :D
Antilles
I can see where youre coming from on the reality stuff, but like I said last week, when we sit down to watch the show, were not the 20-30 somethings of now, when we loved Doctor Who it was when we are kids and thats how youve gotta watch it. If you look back to, say Pertwees days there was a story called The Claws of Axos where one slightly over-weight minister was apparently given the power to launch a strike against a UFO heading for UK. Im sure in reality it wouldnt have been that simple, but for the sake of a short tv episode were supposed to let these things slide. Artistic license and all that, so long as they dont take it TOO far :) All the kids, and others who dont really care about realism knew was the Doctor had clearance for the UNIT web site which could launch an attack and thats what happened, thats good enough for me, the story worked. Have fun! Enjoy!
Ulysses
The darleks seems to look alot more metalic, with its armour plating and alot less plastic like the old versions in past episodes
SuperK
Then, again, Aliens haven't crashed into the Thames, on their way through Big Ben. Funny what we overlook as we critique episodes, isn't it? Like I said, lots of lattiude on aliens, aliens crashing into Big Ben, etc. Afterall, we don't know anything about Aliens, so they can make that up just about anyway they want to. It's just the stuff we know about that I tend to get agitated over. It just seems that writers for shows/movies just don't seem to care how unworkable something is. For me, it kills the enteraintment value because my suspention of belief is limited by the fact that I'm not an idiot. When the plot line is based on someting I know is completely obsured, it kills it for me. I guess I wish Hollywood (or the BBC in this case) had more critical thinking skills and went to the effort to create stories that revel in the details. Anyways... I think Rose is great. Billie Piper is doing a great job - looks like a new hair do in the next one. Chistopher is also doing great. Like the bits of hummor - the "lots of planets have a north" bit is great. Shame he only wanted to do the one season. Odd, most actors are chomping at the bit to get a gig like that. Thanks goodness for the internet, I woun't get to see this. No US outlets - yet. coolcat13
U.N.I.T. has always had alot of leeway . that is a classic Dr Who trade mark .so by Dr Who cannon they would indeed have had the resources and abilities to pull off the whole missle launch.Furthermore the launch codes were for a world wide strike including all the militaries of the world so though not real .... Oh and by the way evidence last I heard was that a world wide nuclear war would indeed destroy the planet and leave no life on earth .Theories ranging from a nuclear winter to the shredding of the earths atmosphere both have scientific theories supporting complete global destruction if even 70% of the earths nukes were exploded here on earth
