DSWIceman
Best non-64bit CPU you can get is a mobile Athlon. I've got my Athlon Mobile 2400+ overclocked from 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz B) And they are cheap ($70-100)
psheldrake1
I use Intel. Hands down the best processor out there. I use a P3-450 for most internet related surfing and a Dual P4-3 gig for work.
eRRoRz
a non 64 bit cpu? AMD? I dont think so. I just checked... AMD Athlon 2400+ has 16 milion transistors While my Intel 2.0G (A) has 35 milion. Heh, the 'nVidia FX5200' has 18 milion transistors Doesn't that say somethiing? Engineer101
But there are no games currently being made for AMF 64. Wait 10 years and there will be games for it. The world is not yet ready for 64 bit!!!!
eRRoRz
The more transistors the more processing :) There is no Windows that suppports AMD 64, early for games :) but not 10 years i give it 2-

The number of transistors doesnt tell you the whole story, just like the Mhz (cycles per second) doesnt tell the whole story. It all depends on how much work is done per cycle. As I mentioned earlier, becuase of AMD's design (which earned them lots of awards) AMD CPU's can do more work per cycle done Intel chips. Thats why you will not find anyone these days camparing a 2Ghz Intel CPU with 2Ghz AMD cpu, It just doesnt work. A 2Ghz AMD will blow away 2ghz intel any day. A 2Ghz AMD will also blow away a 3ghz Intel. So its not how many transistors you can pack into a single die but exactly how you pack them.

Ulysses
A PC is not just about its processor thou, a good motherboard, graphics card, fast hard drives etc etc A PC is all about a fine blend of all the parts inside it. No point in having a good processor and a cheap crap motherboard.

No point in having a good processor and a cheap crap motherboard. the two main bottlenecks in a system are the cpu and the gpu. so long as those are decent, you're ok. the mobo only limits what you can connect to the system. eg, what kind of vid card, proc, and ram you can use. I have to disagree with you on this part Thanatos.... no matter how fast your cpu is....if the bus speed of your motherboard is low, your system will slow down.... if you have a slow (i.e. 5400 RPM) harddisk, your system will slow down... if you have insufficient RAM... your system will need to use the pagefile/swapfile... which will slow down your system... etc etc. Neomaster is correct...it's a combination of all the parts together.... This also explains why some systems are much faster than others eventhough they have the same cpu specs.
hairymonkey
i go with amd. Fry cry are currently developing there 64bit version which might be out this year and winxp 64 is due for its final realise soon as well. Also Amd done what intel could not with there winchester core, using less resistors having a smaller die size, with a performance gain, while running much cooler, where as intel failed.
