mcant
Got a nightmare at the minute, the machine boots then switches off within a minute or two, obviously Hardware based as iy does it even if running with the bios screen up, (Temp is fine) and I'm starting to think the PSU, time to dig the tester out past nightmares, easily Customers, two spring to mind, the one who insisted their sound card was broken (muted!!!!) and the woman who thought her mouse pointer moved when she clicked, honest to god she was't moving her hand!! randomname
I think the time I somehow 'lost' a hard drive containing 250GB of all my music, recorded and downloaded TV and movies, and more importantly, all my photos and home movies would qualify. I don't know what happened, I booted up, left the room, came back a minute later to find XP in the middle of a thorough pre-startup disk error check. When Windows finally loaded, I looked through the D: drive to find -nothing-. I panicked. Tried everything - norton protected crap bin, data recovery programmes, everything. Never recovered a damn thing. Then I went for a drive and threw the drive out of the window (no pun intended). Lesson learned, all my media is now backed up to DVD, and all my essential files on all my computers are now backed up to the server, which is ghosted weekly. Paranoid, yes, but once bitten and all that.
BigDawgAMD
[snip=vystral] . I think the chain is going bad because the tower has been making a mysterious grinding sound on start up for a while now. :( Oh, well. Wish me luck in motherboard shopping!!![/snip] This might be a silly question, but did you check your power supply? There are only 3 things in a tower that will make grinding noises, Power supply, fans, and HD's. If you have checked the other 2? I know for a fact that a P/S going bad will cause symptons like that. That is why i have an antec 550w truepower now.
TetsuoShima
Yeah, Antec Truepowers are great, I have one too. Only the 430W version, but still...

xtremeskiing
My computer burnt up in a house fire and I'm trying to make it work. Good side: I got to show off in the computer store how old school knowledge about math and memory addresses still beat following the "mickey mouse" directions of XP....and of course I pointed out how I was 4 years out of practice Bad Side: I never really like being in the repair/recovery sect of computing, yet here I am knee deep in soot, ash and silicone....even worse..its my computer this time Other good side: apperently im still good at what i do cause im typing this on the computer I have now nicknamed "Crispy" who is a shadow of the former glory she used to be. Other bad side: the non-ionizing cleaning solvents touched my freshly regrown skin on the burn spots and it FREAKING HURTS.
