i would love to see Ian Richardson in the role. He has the right unusual look and is a brilliant actor who doesn't take himself too seriously. I could see him doing very well as a cross between hartnell and Mccoy

I also would've chosen Richard E. Grant, His webcast "Scream of the Shalka" was excellent.

Also where does that story now fit into the scheme of things? Is it not part of any "Who" canon?

I saw David Tennant in the BBC production "Casanova" and he is a really good actor , but I don't know how He'll do as the Doctor

If anyone wants me to upload the movie"Casanova" to check him out let me know. it's not Sci-Fi , but it's relative, and not that bad a movie.

As far as "Q" being the Doctor, I think that he, while being a very nice chap in real life, has a sinister look to him, and also I think people equate him with the part of "Q" on Star Trek, so everytime you'd see him you'd think he was supposed to be acting a certain way. So he wouldn't even be considered. I think it's kind of important to get someone who is relatively an unknown.

David Warner has played the Doctor in the Big Finish unbound audio 'Sympathy for the Devil' alongside the Brigadier. I believe he also doing a second one as well (He has also taken over the role of Steel in the BF Shaphire and Steel audios).

As for Alan Rickman I would humbly point out his performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves to anyone who say he takes himelf too seriously!!!

Well, I guess my own thing is I like the serious mystery man angle to Doctor Who to come up from time to time. Both of these guys give that old-school Doctor Who air of importance and high breeding, as well as intelligence, but they can also seem very dark and broody. I guess I kinda think of it like, if Tom Baker couldn't have done his first couple of seasons, who could have pulled off that same sort of vibe? You could plug Warner or Rickman into something like ZYGONS, PYRAMIDS, or SEEDS OF DOOM and not miss a beat. They have that intensity to them that Baker just absolutely did so well.

He did a piss-take Dr Who once, can't remember what it was for though. Probably some charity thing.

I would go with Richard E. Grant as well, he's eccentric enough. I don't think his web cast is too much to worry about when it comes to Dr Who "canon", they've monkeyed around with so many things over the years that it doesn't really matter - there've been a couple of rogue doctors in the past that didn't fit anywhere.

I think the Richard E Grant should have been considered, then when the did the 10 Doctors it could have passed off as a Withnail and I reunion.

My outside runner would have been Nicholas Lyndhurst

Ooops on the double post. I like Nicholas Lyndhurst, I think hes a fine actor, however, I couldn't really see him as the Doctor. He just doesn't seem to have the presence for the part. Emotional range - definitely. Mind you I've only really seen him in sitcoms like 'Only fools...' and 'Godnight Sweartheart'

What serious roles as he done?

Good Choices:

Anthony Stewart Head is a natural for the part.

Patrick Stewart would be amazing but maybe too typecast in the world of SF.

Roger Lloyd Pack who is an outstanding serious actor although best known for his comedy roles.

Tom Baker. I quite liked the idea of bringing back Baker as an older version of an earlier incarnation.

Bad Choices.

Alan Rickman. Too well known for being sinister.

Nicholas Lyndhurst. I nearly fell over when I saw that and I'm lying down!

Ian Mckellern. A lousy Gandalf who would make a lousy Doctor. (Ironically I think Baker would have been an outstanding Gandalf)

Baker as Gandalf would have been too cool.

I think Anthony Head would have been a good choice.

Alan Rickman may be too well known for being Sinister, but what's wrong with casting against type?

How about Chris Barrie? Doctor Rimmer reporting for duty!!

Lots of great suggestions but my bias would lie with Jason Isaacs.

Most Americans really only know him for his villians (Tavington, Lucius Malfoy, etc) but if you seen him do the dual roles in Peter Pan (Captain Hook and Mr. Darling) then you know he has some wonderful range.

Now there's a thought, Jason Isaacs, yep I could see him doing a slightly sinister Doctor. Jason Carter as well, better known as Marcus Cole from Babylon 5.

Although I am quite looking forwards to seeing what David Tennant can do with the role.
