Wonderful chap - all of them!!!!

What area of Doctor Who would you like to discuss?

the bit about time travel?

Maverick,

I take it that you are not familar with the series? Here is a (very) brief rundown. It srt of has to be brief becuase the show orginally started in 1963, and ran for 26 years before being put on a 15 year hiatus. That is a lot of ground to cover.

The show follows around the character of "The Doctor", a mysterious, eccentic, erratic, and intelligent being on his adventures through time and space. The Doctor can accomplish this through his "ship", the TARDIS, an advanced, empathic, erratic, and tempermental craft that materiazed in differnt places. The TARDS is "dimensionally tracendental" means that it"s interior dimensions do not have to match it"s exterior dimensions (it"s bigger on the inside that on the outside). The TARDIS also has a "chameleon circuit" that is supposed to scan a destination and alter the craft"s exterior so that it can blend in with the surroundings. On a trip to London in 1963 the Doctor"s TARDIS malfuncioned "freezing" it in the shape of a Police Box (a common site in London at that time).

The Doctor travels from place to place, frequently getting invloved in the troubles happening in whatever plae he winds up. As his TARDIS is somewhat erratic, at times (probably more often than not) it materialized somewhere other than where the Doctor was planning to go.

That should be enough to get you started, or at least lead to more questions!

You forgot to say that usually takes a young human (usually female) as his companion on his adventures throughout time and space and that unlike contempary heroes he always tries to use his brains rather than violence to stop the monsters.

I'm an advid fan of the new series, and I've checked out a few of the Tom Baker and McCoy stories, and I've been wondering about one thing. It seems that he refers to himself, and others refer to him as "The Doctor". Is he ever refered to as "Doctor Who" at all? I've noticed that Baker is credited as "Doctor Who" in the ending credits, so... uh.... *mental trainwreck*

//It's been years since I've had the chance to ask a stupid n00b question like this :)

In part 2 of An Unearthly Child when Ian calls him Doctor Foreman, he utters to himself 'Doctor Who?'

I think the only other time it was used was in 'The War Machines' when Wotan the computer said 'Doc-tor WHO-is -re-quired!' apparently someone complained and the BBC apparently never made that mistake again.

Can somone post how many times hes used the name John Smith (or how many references to John Smith)? Theres a toughie for you all.

He was only ever referred as DR WHO in a story called the war machines and the Peter Cushing movies. The character has always just been referred to as the Doctor. The Who in the title refers to the question: Who exactly is the Doctor? really, I suppose that the title should have a question mark in it, as in Doctor Who? , because noone knows exactly who he is.

The 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Doctors all had question marks on various parts of their outfits to represent this. The 7th Doctor also had a question mark on his calling card as well as a question mark pullover and umbrella. This was all a bit self referential for me.

The orgins of the Doctor is very much a mystery and has caused endless debates (and i'm not even gonna crack the mass debates joke lol).

According to one version of continuity he is just(!?) a Time Lord. In another version he is a the mysterious 'Other', one of the three founding fathers of the Time Lords (alongside Omega and Rassilon). Though unlike the other two, The Other is not a Time Lord, but something far more manipulative, powerful and unknown. See the novel 'Lunbarrow' for more details.

The 4th Doctor said his nickname during his time in Time Lord academy was Theta Sigma. In a story called 'The brain of Morbius' we caught glimpses of incarnations prior to the first televised Doctor (these were actually pictures of the production crew of the story), and this seems to support the theory of 'The Other'.

And finally he 8th Doctor tried to win sympathy with american viewers, by claiming he was half human on his mother's side, but whether or not this is true is anybody's guess.

And now the 9th Doctor claims to be the Last of the Time Lords (which is co-incidently, the name of an aborted Doctor Who movie).

There is mythalogical base for this. According to the stories of several ancient societies, knowing the true name of your enemy gave you power over him/her (Though they might be a certain truism in this, think about how many times you sign your name and the legal power of that signature - lol). So The Doctor deliberately doesn't let his enemies know that much about him.

Hope that helps.

Privacy is not something that I'm merely entitled to, it's an absolute prerequisite.
