Viacom's Star Trek guru, Harry Lang, has made a forum post about it Here

As far as what's in store for the future, there are some interesting developments. While not set in stone yet, discussions are on going for several all-new ST games (anybody here like strategy?). And one you might play sooner than you think if it happens These would be traditional SP/MP games. In addition, there are a couple of other initiatives I'm involved with. One involves resurrecting a previously cancelled ST game, and another is an idea I had that would involve the modding scene exclusively.

yeah and also

Viacom Consumer Products Senior Director Harry Lang has posted over at Star Trek Gaming Universe giving an update on the state of Star Trek gaming. The previously announced Star Trek Online is deep in design, and is set for beta sometime in 2006, release sometime in 2007. Harry also revealed that several all-new singleplayer/multiplayer Star Trek games, specifically mentioned "strategy" genre, are being discussed, as well as the resurrection of a previously cancelled ST game, as well as a project that would involve the modding scene exclusively.

A great idea for a ST game would be one where the player can go through an entire career in Starfleet. He/she could start as an ensign (after completing a final examination at the academy to determine suitability for the lowly Scoutship or bigger assignments like being an ensign on the Ent-D ). The new ensign could go through a whole open-ended career from finishing off as a lowly Lt JG or as high as Fleet Admiral, or go so far as command the starship Voyager and bring it home after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant. The possibilities for where the career could go would be only as limitless as the ST universe itself. If Visual Basic were uploaded we could try tis ourselves.

Hopefully a new Star Trek game will be more emcompassing than previous efforts. Starship Creator had so much potential but fell (probably because of production time restraints) from fan favorite status. That title proved that games that are produced too quickly are not very good in the end. Longevity and replay value are just as important as making a great looking game (of which Starship Creator was not).
