Sci-fi's black hole: Fans ponder life after `Star Wars,' `Star Trek'

By Sean L. McCarthy

Saturday, May 14, 2005 - Updated: 11:18 AM EST

The two titans of Hollywood science-fiction - ``Star Wars'' and ``Star Trek'' - are leaving us.

Well, sort of.

George Lucas will reconfigure his six ``Star Wars'' movies in 3-D, plus helm two TV series (one animated, one live-action) set after ``Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith'' (opening Thursday).

``Star Trek'' reached the final frontier last night with the finale of ``Star Trek: Enterprise'' - unless Paramount decides, as rumored, to pursue another film (or series) with a new cast and crew.

So what should the devotees make of this crossroads?

Will they boldly go wherever ``Trek'' leads them? Will the Force stay with them in perpetuity?

``I'm a little sad about it,'' said Howard Cronson. ``I grew up with both of these franchises.''

Cronson, 41, even served as president of a Boston-based ``Star Trek'' fan association known as the USS Christa McAuliffe. He, like many fans, believes the franchises are never-ending.

``I think as long as there are people who watch these things and get excited about them, there'll be new `Star Trek' and `Star Wars' things, whether it's novels or more films,'' he said.

I wouldn't say either franchises are coming to an end. Star Wars movie have come a close - until GL Becomes bored anyway - But ther are 2 tv series coming out.

Star Trek although, no new series is forthcoming is shown somewhere in world every day - you can have 24hrs a day of it (if you've got a big enough reciever dish, anyway - say the size Aricebo), and there new books out all of the time. And it being more-or-less confirmed that ther will be another movie.

All that happened is that the 2 franchise are moving into different mediums and that's all.

George Lucas has 3 more films to write to finish the origenal script, and last I checked, he intends to.

YOu know star trek isn't over. Paramount won't let it go without a movie at least, especially with all the hype surrounding the cancelation of the entire franchise for the first time in almost 2 decades.

Im not worried, I think that star gate, which is an excellent program, will see a increase in viewers because of the void in sci fie and thus an increase in budget, which might make it very much like star trek at that point.

Yeah...we'll still have SG1...until RDA decides to leave and then it'll go straight to hell. Forget about SG Atlantis...it's already crap. I'll just dig out my old TOS and Voyager EPs and settle in for some real entertainment! Paramount is not stupid...you wait and watch...they know a cash cow when they see one.

Well...OK...Paramount is stupid...

SG1 is nothing compared to Star Trek.

Wasn't meant to be. Otherwise they might have called it Star Trek SG1.

I hope they either somehow wonderfully decide to continue ENT (which would be great) or star a new series. A movie would be great too.
