Over-/Mis-use of the sonic screwdriver

Anybody else think they're going a bit overboard with the sonic screwdriver? It's reversed computers, appears to have been used as a medical scanner*, reattached cut barbed wire, reversed teleports...

In the old series they eventually wrote the sonic screwdriver out because it was getting overused and making things to easy. I really think they're going to have to do that at this point now...

*Ok, I suppose in that he could have been using it just for a bit of light, but it didn't quite seem that way.

He's a time lord for goodness sake! I know, in my household, when something needs fixed, two things come to mind: duct tape and a screwdriver. Who's to say that, in the future, to make things simple, a "sonic screwdriver" isn't the universal tool? It makes sense to me. And if you think a sonic screwdriver is a "cover all makes everything easy" tool, then why didn't he seem thrilled when that's all he had to face the horde of "Mummy" clones?

Relax, enjoy the show, and grab a drink... screwdriver, perhaps?

Has anyone ever heard of... ultrasound? It's not that much of a stretch to use it as a medical scanner. Reversing teleports, on the other hand... that's getting a bit extreme -_-'

True, an advanced multi-tool isn't so bad... there are some situations where even the most powerful tool can't help ^^'

Oh goodness! I don't care if the sonic screwdriver is over used or mis-used! I got stitches in my gut laughing when he used it to reverse Margaret's transport ... thrice!

Actually, I started laughing when Mickey crashed into the janitor and took of with a tin bucket stuck on his foot trailing a couple of yards of toilet paper!

Confidential 10 - "Weird Science" has a long discussion of the sonic screwdriver, including the 'it's doing too much, let's get rid of it' story in, IIRC, the Colin Baker era.

Essentially, it's a gizmo that is used so that they don't have to come up with ever new ways out of minor traps / along minor hindrances, exp. if that would bog down the story itself too much. (If they have to find an ingenious way, they'll have to explain it to the audience, too, that costs time and slows down the pace) If they need to have the Doctor in a fix, the screwdriver can always malfunction, be 'in his other coat' (Tom Baker once, IIRC), get lost, stolen, whatever.

HAHA! Classic T-shirt.

I was a basic, come on now, don't get bent out of shape over a TV-Show discussion kind of warning to certain folks.

Having recently watched CoFD I can fully understand the sonic screwdriver joke now *WEG*

As for the comment about the re-attaching of the barbed wires in [ummm, whatever]The Doctor Dances, don't forget that in [075]Robot, TB re-attached the cut wires on the Ark to get the Oxygen feed to function again.

P.S. How does everyone else number the new episodes? Do you carry on from the last one? Or do you start over again? Over at Dr. Who Guide, they carry on from the start and are consistant. However, they lumped The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances together. At Outpost Gallifrey, they separate them, but still keep up with the numbering from the beginning. I've even seen them start over from 001 again, b/c of a new series, I guess?

The Sonic Screwdriver is classic. Its been used from the Troughton Era to the Davison Era and is a staple of Dr Who lore .

I think its awesome that they are using it and it was quite amusing in the last ep

slightly off topic : in my video collection I have actually numbered the new Dr Who series as 2005 ep 1 etc on my pc its DW2005x1,DW2005x2 ....

edited for spelling

He's an alien, can travel through time and space, is over 900 years old, has two hearts, has destroyed an entire race, been at and made historical events... but he's not allowed to have a multi-purpose tool.

Hmmmmm. B)

Heh: best quote ever!

The Doctor's sonic screwdriver got zapped into junk in the Peter Davison era, during 'The Visitation'.

Doctor: "I feel like I've just lost an old friend..."
