Fenriswolf
By the Terraleptils no less, GRR, I was really peeved at that turn of events. So were many fans, they wrote hundreds if not thousands of letters to the BBC complaining.
CC
He's an alien, can travel through time and space, is over 900 years old, has two hearts, has destroyed an entire race, been at and made historical events... but he's not allowed to have a multi-purpose tool. Hmmmmm. B) No, no, I'm not saying he's not allowed to have a multi-purpose tool. But you've got to have some limits on things. Otherwise you run into the trouble of making things far too easy for him and all that.
Fenriswolf
I wouldn't say he's had it easy, while Jack gets the 'squareness' gun and the Doctor, he and Rose are facing the mindless in Doctor Dances - what can the Doctor do? Nothing. He can't even use the screwdriver to set up a harmonic resonance in the concrete to loosen the bars, so they're trapped. Jack has a teleporter and a sonic pistol. The Doctor has his screwdriver. He can attach a few bits of barbed wire, yet they still end up being surrounded by the mindless. So all in all I don't think the screwdriver's been over or mis-used yet compared to the tricks that Jack and his timeship could pull off. We've seen him use the teleport trick before, so that's a nice little bit of continuity. He even tried to triplicate the flammability of the alchohol, which was as we knew, a ruse. andipandi3
I'm a big fan of the sonic screwdriver, but there does come a point in time where it seems just as easy as saying a wizard did it. half the reason I thinked it worked that k9 had the stair/water limitations is that he would have been able to always rescue them. deux ex machina, contretemps? petra1989
I'm sure somewhere on the Tardis there is sonic Duct tape. Seriously, I love it when he pulls out the sonic screwdriver. Other sci-fi shows allow their character to have little tools that do a lot (tri-corders come to mind). So let the Doctor keep the screwdriver. Fenriswolf
Tri-corders, phasers and you name it, all the poor Doctor has is that screwdriver. *starts a petition in advance* Save the screwdriver!

coolcat13
but seriously the sonic screwdriver is an icon of Dr Who lore isnt it ?
Fenriswolf
Indeed, very much so. There was a massive explosion of fan hatred/anger towards the BBC when they wrote out the screwdriver almost as bad as when they wrote out K9.
