Pendrake
hey guys, im doing a speech about respect for my english class and i was trying to fit in an example about Star Trek. So far, this is what i have for the example: Now, as I am pretty sure you all know, I really like Star Trek and as such, I hope you respect my wish to use it as an example for my speech. Now, the thing that I like the most about Star Trek is that people have respect for one another. Star Trek is just that in my opinion. It is a demonstration of what our society would be like if we all had respect for each other. And no, not even Star Trek is perfect. But, the thing is, even if someone performs a crime, the law still respects that person. There is no death penalty in Star Trek. The government has enough respect for criminals that instead of sentencing them to death, they instead try to help these people. They try to understand why they did what they did and then they attempt to help them. Now, firstly, is what i say about star trek accurate? secondly, what are your opinions of star trek and respect? Yammichi
Well Pendrake it sounds pretty good so far, just one piece of advice, from what I've read you say Star Trek a few too many times too often, try to substitute words like "This Show" and "That Future Universe", useing the words Star Trek so Often begins to make it sound redundant, and people will begin to loose interest................other than that good work.............. Beawulf
also, might need to make clear you are refering to the federation as not all the trek cultures treat prisoners with as much respect.

Pendrake
here, this is the full example. Uless, someone gives me some suggestions that is. Now, the thing that I like the most about Star Trek is that people have respect for one another. Star Trek is just that in my opinion. It is a demonstration of what our society would be like if we all had respect for each other. And no, not even Star Trek is perfect. But, the thing is, even if someone performs a crime, the laws of the federation still respects that person. There is no death penalty in this alter reality. The government has enough respect for criminals that instead of sentencing them to death, they instead try to help these people. They try to understand why they did what they did and then they attempt to help them. Another very crucial aspect is the respect towards other peoples. In this future universe, there are hundreds of different aliens co-existing and, for the most part, being friendly to one another. Where we live, in this present day, some people continue to disrespect other people because they have a different color of skin or even hair. Just think of all the jokes that are made that disrespect other people. There are jokes about people’s nationality, their weight, and even girls with blonde hair. We are in no way even close to being able to respect another completely different civilisation. This is the reason that I believe that, if they exist, aliens have not yet made contact with us. We just aren’t ready. In the show, people don’t care about what the other looks like because they know that it’s what’s inside that counts. There are so many different alien races that if they did have a problem with someone looking different, they would be missing many opportunities to get to know some very amazing people and even make some really good friends. Yammichi
Just a personal question, do people not laugh and make fun of you when talking about Star Trek in school, because when I was a Kid everyone made fun of me, but I just thought that was because they were so closed minded that they just felt it neccasary to tease me, actually I was once physically beaten up for talking about it, do these things not happen in school any more? People actually dont care. I think it has a lot to with with the fact that i do respect everyone i know though. People know that im a pretty good guy and they dont really care that im a bit of a geek. Heck, we had to write a poem about ourselves and i presented mine for an extra 10%. I said in one part of my poem that i didnt care if people thought i was a geek. When i was finished, a couple of the "cool" people yelled out that i wasnt one. Pendrake
alright, im not 100% sure if this is final, but here is my speech. Respect Respect is a very hard word to explain. Every time I try to come up with my own definition, it always ends up with the word respect in it and that just won’t help. But we all know what respect is. We have all known this word from a very young age. The problem is I don’t think everyone has respect for one another. If everyone in the world had respect for each other, this really would be a great place to live. Now, as I am pretty sure you all know, I really like Star Trek and as such, I hope you respect my wish to use it as an example for my speech. Now, the thing that I like the most about Star Trek is that people have respect for one another. Star Trek is just that in my opinion. Where we live, in this present day, some people continue to disrespect other people because they have a different color of skin or even hair. Just think of all the jokes that are made that disrespect other people. There are jokes about people’s nationality, their weight, and even girls with blonde hair. We just aren’t ready. In the show, people don’t care about what the other looks like because they know that it’s what’s inside that counts. There are so many different alien races that if they did have a problem with someone looking different, they would be missing many opportunities to get to know some very amazing people and even make some really good friends. Respect is a very important thing to me. I also feel that it is important to most of you because I feel that I am usually respected in return. I was actually on a message board on the internet the other night discussing this very subject because I wanted to know if I got my Star Trek facts right. One person’s response was a question. He wanted to know if I got beat up for talking about Star Trek at school. It is something that happened to him when he was a kid. From this, I realized how lucky I am that the people I know respect me enough to not care that I am into science fiction. From this, also came up a belief that we both share. This belief is that I don’t really care what a person does or believes as long as this thing doesn’t affect another in a negative way. You do your thing, ill do mine. What does it matter what the other thinks or does? It doesn’t.
