Dr. Who 27x13 - The Parting of the Ways

Which makes me think what are the chances they had to change the Bad Wolf ending because of the Eccleston leaving situation?

I'm starting to think that this entire season was supposed to be just a one shot with one Doctor. I read somewhere that they shot the regeneration scene in January, way before the public knew CE was leaving.

I also feel that CE's Doctor could not go any further as a chracter. He was so emotionally damaged from the Time War, I wanted to hand him some Zoloft.

So they probally planned one series, so if it failed, they could end it without disapointing the fans.

I'll add my bit to this.

1) Overall I thought this was an excellent series. Chris, Billie, RTD, and all did a great job.

2) I really, really liked CE as the Doctor. I liked his way of being both serious and playful, and the energy that he brought to the roll (I guess that's part writing too).

3) I can't find the real story on his departing. It seems there are a number of stories from he was only signed on to one season, he had artistic issues; to he had skin problems (?!!? how's that work?). I'd be curious to know. Regardless, he's made it a tough act to follow.

4) This Tenant guy - don't know him, but I guess that' to be expected from an American :D . I hope I like him, but I got to admit the first few seconds have me thinking I'm going to miss CE. Not fair, granted, but initial reaction.

5) I thought the TARDIS/Rose being the Bad Wolf was pretty good, and the scenes quite powerful and well done.

6) That said, simply "dividing" the Dalek's away was anti-climatic, and makes you wonder if the TARDIS has such power, why not use more often?

7) The Daleks are not scary to me. I'm not a big Dr. Who fan from way back, pretty much new to it. I think the problem is they were created back in the day when a rolling pepper-pot with one ray gun had some scare factor. Today, after the BORG and all the other sci-fi villains, they seem very unscary.

I think that killing them off may have been in part recognition that they really couldn’t be updated and scary again. Hopefully, the Cybermen will update better.

8) I tend to like the one story episodes better than the two parters. I think mostly I felt the stories didn't really need the full time of the two parts to play out.

9) My favorite episode was actually The Long Game. The guy that played The Editor - brilliant. Oh, sorry: Fantastic!.

My least favorite was Boom Town.

The one I thought was most problematic was actually Father's Day. Since they can't explain time travel, I think Dr. Who works as long as they don't try. The plot of Father's Day was too involved in the "How" of time-travel and it made you want an explanation of the mechanics. You didn't get it, since it's not possible.

10) My biggest/one complaint: The Bi-sexuality of Jack, and by implication the human race of his time. It added nothing to the story line. It's not logical, and totally gratuitous and unnecessary. I didn’t see the point in it, and considering that it’s billed as a family show, I’d expect that a sensitive issue would either be carefully dealt with or avoided.

I guess that about does it for my comments. Not so much just on parting of the ways, but there it is.

Now, I guess I have to wait for BSG to start up again to have something to download. So many channels, so little worth downloading!

These Daleks were toned down. I never was really frightened with the Daleks (I started watching the show in my preteen years I think I was already too old to be scared), but they disturbed me. Resurrection of the Daleks was a good disturbing story and made me really get creeped out. But these Daleks seemed tame.

I agree the Cybermen should update better. My fear is that too many new fans will think the Cybermen are rip offs of the Borg (Mainly here in America).

These Daleks were toned down. They seemed unsure and unsteady at times. But then they were half-human, so perhaps that's why.

But to understand the Daleks, you have to understand that the basis of Dalek-ism is Fascism in its most deadly form. It's their philosophical system that is scary. They are a militaristic race committed to genocide of anything that is "non-Dalek". In them we are supposed to see the worst in ourselves.

BTW, I'm not sure the Daleks are "dead". They've been "killed off" many times before, and are the Doctor's arch-enemy, and Fascism never dies in the hearts of those who live to hate.

well at least 2 or 3 got transmatted somewhere else when they bumped into the ann droid when they invaded the station so christ knows where they got sent to lol

Assuming Jack didn't mess with the prearrange coordinates, they were blasted to where the Dalek fleet had been. So they are probally floating around out there.

Without a reception station at the other end? They'll probably just exist as a probabilitgy wave (of the Heisenberg type) until someone manages to pick them up...

I'll add my bit to this.

7. Daleks not scary, all deppens on what ages you are, i am sure for younger kids they still have there moments, also the BBC cant have anything to scary as this show is aimed at a family audience and is shown at prime time on a saturday (7pm). The BBC would get collared if they did by the brocasting authority.

I dont think they have been killed off, the BBC wouldnt allow it as its one of the key enermies of the doctor and they will return in the future (as they always do).

9. My favorite has to be dalek ep 6, thought it was a wonderful episode with alot of feeling and emotion running in it, CE was great in this showing the "scared" doctor when he first confronts the dalek.

10. I wouldnt actually say jack was being bi sexual, yeah he did kiss the doctor but you couldnt say it was in a sexual way.

That kiss wasn't sexual, granted. But, I have never seen or had a straight male friend say good by like that. Hug, yeah, kiss on the lips. Never.

Also, Jack was introduced in The Doctor Dances in a manner that very strong implies that, if not out right saying, he's Bi. The Doctor also implies that;s typical for humans of his time with his "So many species, so little time" bit.

As to the scariness -- if they were afraid of getting blasted for being too scary, they would have toned down "The Empty Child". That was definitely the most unsettling episode.

The "scared Doctor" in ep. 6: That brought a smile to my face when I saw it the second time around. It almost looks as if CE watched Remembrance of the Daleks (Sylvester McCoy): the way he scrambles at the door trying to get out looks a lot like Sylvester scrambling at the door at the end of pt 1, when the Dalek floats up the stairs to get the Doctor.

OK season in a nut shell

excellent over all

Liked the main characters and the development of them .

Liked the way RTD blurred the line between white and black hats .The Dr who was unhinged at times and the Daleks and Sliveen who were almost likable at times

Liked Jack after a bit but still thought that the Bi Sexual thing was over emphasised.

The two parters all felt like the second part was rushed all three had better 1st parts than second parts except the Aliens of London and WWlll which both were average episodes

was intrigued that the TARDIS had so much power in it and the reason that it hadnt been used is that it causes death or forced regeneration

one last note : did any one else catch the political connection of the Daleks in Parting of the Ways and a certain president who believes that he is God or talks to him ?

That reminds me, doesnt the TARDIS still have 'HADS' in cases such as being fired upon by missiles? And also I wasnt aware the ship could fly through 'physical' space, I always thought it was travelling in dimension. Unless of course the missiles had been fired to fly along its space/time line. Hmm not sure, might be getting too deeply technical there and just forget it and enjoy the action! :)

*HADS=Hostile Action Displacement System (I think) as used by Troughton in The Krotons.

I thought it was a pretty good ending for the season. I liked the whole "Bad Wolf" thing. Apparently I'm not very observant because I didn't really think anything of it until it was pointed out. I didn't think the kiss between Jack and The Doctor was gratuitous nor does his being bi bother me. It just adds to his character. John Barrowman, who is openly gay, was born in Scotland, but was raised in the US which is why he has such a believable American accent. I'm going to miss CE as The Doctor. I hate that he decided to leave, but I can understand it under the circumstances. I hope this new guy will do a good job and I hope that Rose will have good chemistry with him also.

Nice to see you again Steven, and I have the same view of that. Rose was in control, rather than the other way around. It was nice to see a companion actually solving the whole thing with a great show of power, rather than the hero being able to do everything and the companion just there as a 'scream' machine.

Welcome back Steven ,

I was not real sure on who was using whom but possiably it was like in BoomTown where the heart of the TARDIS saw Roses deepest desires and they worked in conjunction to fixing things .This could have had the effect of changing the TimeLine as well and maybe Galifrey is back from the dead or even the Master who was "eaten" by the TARDIS in the movie

There were things I loved and things I didn't abou this episode. I loved the whole 'Bad Wolf' thing - I was nowhere near - at all. And I loved the the scenes with the possessed Rose it was brilliant (tho I was a bit distracted by her tears ruining her make up lol).

I didn't like the reason for the rengeration tho. Surely if the Doctor had absorbed the entire time vortex, then so had rose - why didn't kill her? (the only way I can rationalize it is, if during the kiss, the Doctor brought Rose back to life, just as she had done with Jack).

I loved the actual regeneration scene - definitely the best one so far.
